The Vale of Glamorgan Railway

January 19th, 2007

The Vale of Glamorgan Railway is a heritage railway based at Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. There is a heritage centre (VoGRC) with a short running track at Barry Island, near to the site of the former Woodhams’ Scrapyard. The former wagon repair works building at Barry is now used to store rolling stock undergoing restoration. Much of the line’s stock was moved from Cardiff Bay railway station when that site was redeveloped as part of the Cardiff Bay redevelopment project. Some parts of the line, particularly around the Plymouth Road/Barry Island area, were used for several scenes in the Doctor Who episodes The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances in January 2005.

The Vale of Glamorgan Railway seeks to bring back the former glory days of its great seaside past. They are a non profit making organisation which strives to enhance the rich nostalgic past for those who remember the days of steam…and those too young to know!

Through our scheduled steam days and special events such as “A Day out with Thomas” we hope to bring all generations together in their enjoyment of a great day out!

Trains run from Barry Island, to Hood Road for the waterfront, or Woodham Halt for the Heritage Skills centre. Trains also run to Plymouth Road for the engine shed and museum displays.

Why not enjoy a snack in our Barry Island Buffet, where there is a variety of sandwiches, rolls and pastries, as well as hot and cold drinks, available on all operating days!
